PRESS STATEMENT: U.S. Department of Education is Right to Investigate New York City Public Schools

The Gevura Fund applauds the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights for opening a Title VI investigation into the New York City Department of Education over alleged antisemitic discrimination against Jewish students.

For too long, antisemitism has been tolerated in parts of New York City’s public school system. Jewish students deserve learning environments free from harassment, intimidation, and discrimination.

“New York City is one of the most culturally and religiously diverse cities in the world, and hatred has no place in its public schools,” said Brigette Herbst, Executive Director of The Gevura Fund. “We commend the Department of Education for taking these allegations seriously and investigating whether Jewish students’ civil rights were violated.”

The Gevura Fund works to combat antisemitism in K-12 education and support policies that protect students and families from discrimination and ideological extremism in schools.

The Department of Education announced the investigation on April 23, citing concerns that Jewish students may have been subjected to a hostile environment in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
